Art apron

For one of my garments i want to make an apron for an art teacher, so as part of y research i took photographs of a worn art apron that was covered with plaster, wax, paint, charcoal etc. It helped me see what sort of textures i wanted to create on the apron.

Working Sketches

Whilst watching Goodnight Mister Tom i quickly sketched the shapes and clothes that the actors wore in the film. This inspiring the ideas for my illustrations.

Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel

French fashion designer, what made her such an important figure in the 20th century was her modernist philosophy, menswear inspired fashions and pursuit of expensive simplicity. Founder of Chanel.

Elsa Schiaparelli

(1890-1973)
Italian fashion designer along with Coco Chanel, she was one of the most prominent figures between the world wars. She's heavily influenced by Surrealism and most famous for her collaborations with Salvador Dali and Albert Giacometti.

1930's Womenwear

From the 1920's to the 1930's the skirts became longer, the waist line returned o its normal position for the traditional womanly look. Cloche hats remained popular until around 1933, short hair remained popular until the late 1930's. Gloves were important aswel. Evening gowns were accompanied by elbow length gloves and day wear costumes were worn with short opera length gloves. Costume jewellery was originally inspired by the art deco movement. It then moved onto the retro period (1935-1950) which the aim was to be glamour , elegance and sophistication. Underwear in the 1930's brought back the corset or 'girdle' women also started to wear a strapless bra which gained popularity with its ability to push the breasts up and enhance cleavage. During the war, women wore skirts at knee length with square shouldered jackets which often fastened at the waist with a belt. Many magazines advised women on remaking mens suits into smart outfits.

Female teachers in the 1930's

Female teachers in the 1930's wore short sleeved, long dresses that went to about mid calf. /they also wore skirts of the same length with buttoned shirts and sometimes a jacket and scarf.
Married women had to rely on their husbands wages as men were generally paid 75% more than women because they have to support a family. During the depression there was married women to stay at home, even if they did need the money. Many single women agreed that they were entitled to make a living as they did not have a husband to support them.

Cloud Diagrams

To begin my research i constructed a cloud diagram to help me organise my research.

In this project i had to study a poem to direct my research, i came up with my own interpretation of the poem. Beginning my research in a diary layout it helped me understand my character.
